In keeping with the theme of the pavilion and th e strengths of the Hornstein collection in areas of still life and landsca pe especially\, the event is framed around the subject of peace\, broadly construed. From art theorist Karel van Mander’s dictum that painting loves peace and prosperity\, to Hegel’s claim that Dutch paintings of everyday scenes depict the joys of a Sunday of life\, to Svetlana Alpers’ assertion that the descriptive visual mode was a way to handle strife\, Dutch and F lemish painting has long been perceived as a peaceful art. The invited spe akers will address specific works in the collection in order to interrogat e the connections between peace\, conflict\, and painting.\n\n \n\nMONDAY\ , MARCH 20\, 2017 \n 6:30 pm - Keynote Talk: Faire la paix avec l’image: ic onoclasme\, iconodulie et iconocratie dans la peinture hollandaise du XVII e siècle\, Prof. Jan Blanc\, Université de Genève \n\nTUESDAY\, MARCH 21\, 2017 \n 10:00 am - Opening Remarks Prof. Angela Vanhaelen\, 91Ö±²¥ Univers ity\n 10:10 am - Presentation of the Hornstein donation of Dutch and Flemis h paintings to the MMFA Dr. Hilliard Goldfarb\, Montreal Museum of Fine Ar ts\n \n Morning Session - Moderator: Prof. Stephanie Dickey\, Queen’s Univer sity\n 10:30–11:00 - Making Paradise\, Prof. Elizabeth Honig\, University o f California\, Berkeley\n 11:00–11:30 - Vision\, illusion et séduction: ima ges doubles et paradoxales dans la peinture hollandaise du XVIIe siècle\, Prof. Denis Ribouillault\, Université de Montréal\n 11:30–12:00 - A Peacefu l Home\, a Peaceful Society\, Dr. Betsy Wieseman\, National Gallery\, Lond on\n 12:00–12:30 - Discussion\n\nAfternoon Session - Moderator: Prof. Angel a Vanhaelen\, 91Ö±²¥\n 2:00–2:30 Picturing Peace: Collecting Ita lianate Landscape Paintings in 17th-Century Amsterdam\, Dr. Jacquelyn N.
