Abstract: This paper ex amines the cultural agendas and visual strategies developed and deployed b y Algerians and non-Algerians from the 1960s to the 1980s in order to mobi lize the memory of the War of Independence (1954-1962) for various and oft en contradictory purposes both within Algeria and without. Drawing attenti on to the ways in which such commemorative projects are complicated by con temporary events\, I aim to further challenge the visual narratives develo ped to communicate Algeria's decolonization by comparing these earlier pro jects to more recent efforts to commemorate Algeria's subsequent civil war (1991-2002) by diasporic artists who have come to enjoy celebrity and pro minence in the international art market.
