N oting the marginal place of war in seventeenth century Dutch art\, Alpers appeals to an oblique engagement with conflict that she calls “the painter ly pacific.” Fluid and suggestive\, Alpers’s phrase positively invites fur ther thinking. In dialogue with Media@91ֱ’s 2012-3 theme of “Media\, Wa r and Conflict\,” this symposium uses Alpers’s phrase as prompt for consid ering ways in which artists\, beholders and even objects variously displac e or placidly conceal violence. Borrowing our title from Soundings from th e Atlantic\, Oliver Wendell Holmes’s classic meditation on photography\, t he symposium poses the painterly pacific between mood and place\, between medium and liquid geography. Please RSVP (matthew.hunter3 [at] mcgill.ca) if you wish to partake in the (delicious) lunch.
