Abstract:ÌıThroughout its history, science has inspired trust in some, and skepticism in others. We must ask when we hear that we wish the general community to trust science, does that mean trust the process of science, particular persons or entities acting in the scientific community, particular studies or particular conclusions? In each case, the answers may be different. In the case of trusting actors and studies, a prerequisite to legitimate trust is trustworthiness. Trustworthiness exists in degrees, it is not a simple yes or no, and it exists to the extent that the methods used in the process justify it. These methods include, but are not limited to, methods involving the design, analysis, and interpretation of studies, especially involving statistical issues. In this talk, I will highlight common mistakes made at each level that can reduce trustworthiness and offer suggestions for how to create trustworthiness by following the motto, “Prevent, Detect, Admit, Correct.â€
