The Basics of ICANN and Global Internet Governance

Abstract
This presentation will cover the basics of the聽Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and global Internet governance, with a specific focus on the new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) program being administered by ICANN, as well as the decision of the U.S. Government to transfer its stewardship over the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) to the global multistakeholder community. The process for this transfer is being convened by ICANN, and is being accompanied by a process to enhance ICANN鈥檚 organizational accountability.
Joseph Catapano
Joe Catapano is part of ICANN's Global Stakeholder Engagement team, coordinating ICANN鈥檚 engagement with regional stakeholders in the private sector, technical community, academia and public interest organizations. Joe works closely with the Communications and Policy teams to draft position papers and outreach materials to be used in furtherance of the GSE team鈥檚 mission and objectives in North America.
Prior to his association with ICANN, Joe was a Communications Officer at the United Nations Foundation.
