DISE's Nanre Nafziger Appointed a 2025 National Academy of Education (NAEd)/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow

We are proud to announce that Nanre Nafziger, DISE, is a 2025 National Academy of Education (NAEd)/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow. Her research topic is Contestations for Nigerian History Education in Primary and Secondary Schools: from Colonialism to Neocolonialism. This year, the selection committee, comprised of leading scholars in education research, selected 25 fellows from an extremely competitive pool of 270 education scholars.

Rachel Cluett Named as Education's Fifth McCall MacBain Scholar

University of Manitoba Bachelor of Arts in Psychology graduate Rachel Cluett is one of 20 Canadians selected to join the fifth cohort of McCall MacBain Scholars at 91ֱ��. Recipients were chosen based on exceptional character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity.

Rachel will pursue a Master of Arts in School/Applied Child Psychology at 91ֱ��'s Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology.

Harm Reduction and Naloxone Training Workshops

Canada in general, and Montreal specifically, have been facing a drug toxicity and fatal overdose crisis for nearly a decade. While integrated systems of interventions are necessary to address drug-related harms, the use of naloxone has been a key strategy to reduce the acute effect of opioid-involved deaths. Currently, 91ֱ�� does not offer naloxone trainings to the campus community, limiting students’ ability to assist in the event of an overdose.

Kiana Kishiyama remembers feeling scared when, at the start of her first undergraduate class in beginner’s Mandarin, her teacher looked at her and said, “You need to speak to me after class.”

“And I’m like, what, I’m in trouble already?”

It turned out that the teacher believed that Kishiyama, who was adopted from China by a Canadian couple, was just being modest about her language skills.

UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development in India (MGIEP) recently hosted Faculty of Education Dean, Vivek Venkatesh, and Professor Joseph Levitan, DISE, for a dialogue on community based participatory action research, and pluralism and polarization.

Their visit was part of a research tour including a dialogue on these topics to foster collaboration and to exchange ideas on education and societal challenges.
