I start with new reduced-form effects of cheaper daycare: (1 ) parents allocate more time to their children and buy more child market g oods\, and (2) high-educated parents increase their parenting time more. T o explain these\, I present a new model of parental time allocation\, wher ein productivity of parenting time (PPT) depends on parents’ education\, i nnate parenting ability and effort\, and mental health. My model’s structu ral estimates reveal that (i) parents perceive parenting time and child ma rket goods as complements\, and (ii) high-educated perceive their PPT as g reater. My model explains (1)–(2) through an interaction between (i)–(ii): as daycare price falls\, parents with greater PPT increase their parentin g time more. If PPT is unaltered when daycare price falls\, child skills i ncrease more for high-educated parents’ children\, where most of the incre ase stems from more parenting—and not daycare—time. Thus\, complementarity magnifies the role of a daycare policy\, and the greater PPT of high-educ ated exacerbates inequality and widens early skill gaps.\n DTSTART:20240213T170000Z DTEND:20240213T180000Z LOCATION:Room 429\, Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 855 r ue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Tímea Laura Molnár (Central European University)\, 'Costs of Daycar e\, Complementarities\, and Heterogeneous Productivity of Parenting Time i n Child Skill Formation' URL:/economics/channels/event/timea-laura-molnar-centr al-european-university-costs-daycare-complementarities-and-heterogeneous-3 54159 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
