Having just survived the incredible heat wave in Quebec, we can certainly say that summer is here! There are many events from the last month that I would like to highlight in my report this month:

Rayhaan Bassawon Receives the Inaugural Dr. Geeta Ishwar Gupta Resilience Prize

On May 29, during the Family Medicine Residency Graduation Ceremony held at Montreal’s Hotel Bonaventure, Rayhaan Bassawon, a recent graduate from the Gatineau University Family Medicine Group (U-FMG), was awarded the inaugural Dr. Geeta Ishwar Gupta Resilience Prize. The award recognizes a graduating resident who demonstrates exceptional resilience, academic excellence and unwavering commitment to community care in the face of systemic challenges.

Family Medicine Academic Day: Celebrating Legacy, Showcasing Innovation

On May 30, 2025, the Department of Family Medicine hosted its inaugural Academic Day at the Hotel Bonaventure in Montreal, bringing together residents, graduate students, researchers, and clinicians to showcase the breadth and depth of scholarship in primary care. Held in collaboration with the Family Medicine Postgraduate Residency Program, the Family Medicine Graduate Students Society (FMGSS) and the 91ֱ�� Primary Care Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN), the event also served as the culminating celebration of the Department’s 50th anniversary campaign.

Douglass Dalton wins the Excellence Award from the CQMF

Douglass Dalton, MD, family physician at the Department of Family Medicine who practices at the CLSC Métro, has won the Excellence Award for Contribution to university/hospital/CLSC and U-FMG life from the Collège québécois des médecins de famille (CQMF).

His accolade from the CQMF website reads:

PPHS 593 Confronting Medical Colonialism provides the knowledge and tools to critically examine past and present discrimination against Indigenous peoples in Canada’s healthcare system.

Before playing a key role in the 2018 #aHand2Hold campaign, Samir Shaheen-Hussain, MDCM, learned about systemic anti-Indigenous racism in healthcare as a pediatric emergency physician.

Bridging Western and Indigenous sciences: Brittany Wenniserí:iostha Jock’s mission for Indigenous health equity

Brittany Wenniserí:iostha Jock, PhD, a proud member of the Bear Clan from the Akwesasne Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) Territory, has dedicated her career to advancing Indigenous health equity. An Assistant Professor in 91ֱ��’s Department of Family Medicine, Prof. Jock combines academic rigour with community-driven approaches to reshape health programs and ensure they address the unique needs of Indigenous Peoples.
