DESCRIPTION:A 2014-2015 Disability\, Human Rights and the Law Seminar.\nAbs
 tract\nArticle 23 of the CRPD requires state signatories to “take effectiv
 e and appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against persons wit
 h disabilities in all matters relating to marriage\, family\, parenthood a
 nd relationships\, on an equal basis with others”. Using the Convention as
  a backdrop\, this seminar will examine issues surrounding disability and 
 family matters. In particular\, it will examine how legal and social const
 ructs of parenthood\, sexuality and sexual health have a dangerous potenti
 al to exclude people with disabilities. We will discuss parenting and adop
 tion for disabled parents and children with disabilities\, as well as the 
 issue of forced sterilization.\nThe event follows the format of a teaching
  seminar and required reading resources will be circulated ahead of time.

 sons with disabilities: The concept of “built environment” refers to all e
 nvironments constructed by humans. Built environments are not only physica
 l constructs but also social\, legal and economic constructs such as famil
 ies\, schools and workplaces. This seminar series will provide insights in
 to the reality of different environments\, whether or not people with disa
 bilities are fully able to benefit from them\, and the barriers that may b
 e preventing full and equal access.\n
