Applicative constructions are a distinctive grammatical feature of the Austronesian languages of western Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. Applicatives in these languages show varied syntactic and semantic properties, and are closely connected to causativization, aspectual meanings, and symmetrical voice. As a result, they do not fit neatly into 'canonincal' patterns for applicatives. This book adopts a construction-based, typologically-grounded approach, treating applicatives as pairi

This work examines Noam Chomsky's widely accepted ontological assumptions, now referred to as 鈥渂iolinguistics鈥濃攁nd demonstrates that they are internally inconsistent. Notably, it is shown that Chomsky himself has at least once admitted this flaw. Additionally, the volume challenges a fundamental assumption from Chomsky鈥檚 1950s linguistic writings. This is the claim that the grammars of natural languages, particularly of English, must be constructive (proof-theoretic) devices, usually called gen

In a world characterised by the presence of multiple, simultaneous and overlapping crises, language and communication have an increasingly important role. For example, in the context of large-scale, societal crises, effective communication during and about a crisis keeps people calm and informed by carefully controlling the flow of information, and by providing guidelines and directions that are understood and accepted by all segments of the populace. Similarly, during organisational, political

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, following the main AMP session held on September 25-26, 2025, there will be a special session on "Deep Phonology: Doing phonology with deep learning" held on the UC Berkeley campus. Phonology has been modeled using rules, constraints, finite state machines, exemplars, and many other approaches. Recent advances in deep learning have prompted researchers to explore how deep neural architectures (e.g., seq2seq models, transformers, RNNs, LSTMs, VAEs, GANs) can sh

Academic communication is configured as a heterogeneous space, in which different functions coexist: from the specialised dialogue between peers, to the formative knowledge construction between teachers and students, up to the divulgative mediation addressed at non-expert interlocutors. Whatever the disciplinary field, academic communication is essentially based on the use of language, in its oral and written forms, to convey and develop concepts and knowledge. The idea for this conference or
