Coffee will be served. \n\nAbstract\n\nIt has been claimed that the early-2000s global warming sl owdown or hiatus\, characterized by a reduced rate of global surface warmi ng\, has been overstated\, lacks sound scientific basis\, or is unsupporte d by observations. In the first half of my presentation I'll provide evide nce that contradicts these claims. In the second half of my presentation I 'll focus on the unexpected decadal cooling that has been observed over No rth America and Eurasia. Both of these (unrelated) phenomena represent a s ignificant deviation from expected anthropogenic warming and so require ex planation. Using very large ensembles of fully coupled\, partially coupled and uncoupled climate model simulations I'll show that these phenomena we re the consequence of rare fluctuations in mid-latitude circulation that\, contrary to recent claims\, were unrelated to tropical Pacific variation or Arctic sea ice loss. These results will highlight how internally-genera ted decadal climate signals can offset anthropogenic warming to produce co ntinental-scale cooling.\n DTSTART:20161024T193000Z DTEND:20161024T203000Z LOCATION:Room 934\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Seminar: Dr. John Fyfe URL:/meteo/channels/event/seminar-dr-john-fyfe-262573 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
