DESCRIPTION: \n\nThis lecture was established in 1986 to recognize the sign
 ificant work of Dr. Jerzy Olszewski.\n\nSpeaker: Liqun Luo\, PhD\n\nProfes
 sor\, Department of Biology\, Stanford University & Investigator\, Howard 
 Hughes Medical Institute\, USA.\n\nAbstract: Developing brains utilize a l
 imited number of molecules to specify the connection specificity of a much
  larger number of neurons and synapses. How is this feat achieved? In this
  talk\, I will first discuss our work using the Drosophila olfactory circu
 it as a model to address this question. I will then discuss analogous func
 tions of some of the wiring molecules we identified in the fly olfactory c
 ircuits also in determining wiring specificity of complex circuits in the 
 mammalian brain\, focusing on the hippocampal network.\n\nRegistration is

 erson.\n\nBio: Dr. Luo grew up in Shanghai\, China\, and earned his bachel
 or's degree from the University of Science and Technology of China. After 
 obtaining a Ph.D. at Brandeis University and postdoctoral training at UCSF
 \, Dr. Luo started his own lab in the Department of Biology\, Stanford Uni
 versity in 1996. His lab studies how neural circuits are organized to perf
 orm specific functions\, and how they are assembled during development. Dr
 . Luo is the Ann and Bill Swindells Professor in the School of Humanities 
 and Sciences\, Professor of Biology\, and Professor of Neurobiology by cou
 rtesy at Stanford University\, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Inves
 tigator. He teaches neurobiology to Stanford undergraduate and graduate st
 udents. His single-author textbook “Principles of Neurobiology” (1st editi
 on 2015\; 2nd edition 2020) is widely used for undergraduate and graduate 
 courses across the world. Dr. Luo is a member of the National Academy of S
 ciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.\n\n\n \n
