Supporting Graduate Training in Sustainability

The fellowships and awards outlined below are made possible through the generous support of our donors. All MEng program applicants are automatically considered for funding opportunities at the time of application to the TISED Masters’ program, unless otherwise specified.

PhD and MSc students supervised by a TISED faculty member and working on sustainability-related topics are eligible for the research awards listed below (see each listing for specific criteria)


The Rubin & So Foundation Fellowship in Sustainability in Engineering and Design

Established in 2024 by to support outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Engineering. Awarded by the Faculty of Engineering on the basis of academic merit students entering the MEng in Sustainable Engineering and Design program at the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design.


J. M. Bishop and Family TISED Fellowship

Established in 2025 thanks to a generous bequest from John M. Bishop, in memory of his parents, John M. Bishop Sr. (B.Eng. 1916) and Jessie M. (Logan) Bishop, as well as in memory of his spouse, Martha (McCutcheon) Bishop, to support outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Engineering. Awarded annually by the Faculty of Engineering on the basis of academic merit to a student entering graduate studies in the field of sustainability. Preference will be given to students entering the Master of Engineering (M.Eng. non-thesis) in the Sustainability in Engineering and Design program at the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design.


Shahbaz Mavaddat Fellowship in Sustainability in Engineering andÌýDesign

Established in 2024 by Esther Varkay to support outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Engineering. Awarded annually by the Faculty of Engineering on the basis of academic merit to at least one student completing graduate studies in the field of sustainability. Preference will be given to women students and international students entering the Master of Engineering (M.Eng. non-thesis) in the Sustainability in Engineering and Design program at the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design.


John M. Bishop and family Fellowships for Sustainability in Engineering and Design

Established in 2004 by John M. Bishop, BEng 1947 in memory of his family, for outstanding graduate students in the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED) under the guidance of a TISED member.


Mike Zahn Fellowship

Established in 2015 by Dorothy Li in memory of her brother, Michael Leonard Zahn, MEng 1989, for one or more graduate students in the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED) under the guidance of a TISED member.


Nick and Judy Kauser Family Graduate TISED Fellowship

Established in 2014 by Nicolas Kauser, B.Eng 1963, and Judy Kauser, for outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research in the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED).


Redwood Graduate TISED Fellowship

Established in 2014 by Feng Lu, MEng 1990, in memory of Professor Emeritus Richard Redwood, for outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research in the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED).


Uma and Mahesh Sharma Graduate TISED Fellowship

Established in 2014 by Mahesh Sharma, Dip Eng 1968, MEng 1972, Dip Man 1974, MBA 1976, in loving memory of his wife, Uma, who with her children, Sandhya and Swati, perished tragically in the bombing of Air India Flight 182. The Uma and Mahesh Sharma Graduate TISED Fellowship was established to recognize outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research in a strategic area of the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED) under the guidance of a TISED member.


ACDEG Fellowship in Sustainable Engineering

Established in 2016 by David Fung, BEng 1970, MEng 1972, PhD 1979 and Grace Fung, BSc 1971, for outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Engineering under the guidance of a TISED member.

In addition to the above, TISED offers awards to outstanding students entering the Master of Engineering (M.Eng. non-thesis) in the Sustainability in Engineering and Design program on the basis of academic merit.
